Divine Sun - Sun as Deity

From the earliest days man has recognized his utter dependence on the life-giving qualities of the sun. Where there is dependence, there follows respect and awe. Coupled with the fiery glory of the solar disk, at which he could not even look directly, it is hardly surprising that the natural response was to deify the sun, and offer it worship.
Many cultures embraced sun worship, in various forms, and in some their worship gave rise to buildings and temples to house the necessary rituals, and do the God honor.

A particularly fine example of this religious solar architecture is the Konarak Sun Temple. Click the colored link to read about it, or select the article by name from the menu on the right.
